Laser Treatments Q & A
What is laser treatment?
Laser treatment uses laser light energy to treat the skin. The laser energy passes through the skin without harming it and targets imperfections.
At San Francisco Dermatology, Dr. Dans uses the VbeamⓇ Perfecta laser to offer great results from laser treatment. This pulsed dye laser uses concentrated yellow light to target reddened or discolored areas of skin while leaving healthy skin undamaged. The Vbeam Perfecta has a cooling system that protects the outer layer of the skin. This laser is considered the gold standard for treating vascular (blood vessel) skin lesions.
What skin imperfections is laser treatment used for?
Dr. Dans uses laser treatment to improve the appearance of many skin imperfections. Laser treatment may help with:
- Scars
- Age spots or sun damage
- Pigmented areas of skin, such as birth marks
- Blood vessels, such as spider veins and other facial veins or capillaries
- Vascular lesions
- Rosacea
After laser treatment, these imperfections will be less visible and skin will have a more even tone. You may need three or four laser treatments to experience the best results. Each treatment only takes 10-15 minutes, and you should begin to see results within just days.
Depending on what skin conditions you are treating, you may need maintenance appointments every 3-12 months. Dr. Dans helps you determine what treatment plan is right for you.
Does laser treatment hurt?
Vbeam Perfecta Laser treatments cause only mild discomfort and do not require pain medication. This laser delivers bursts of gentle light energy which can make your skin feel warm and tingly. It has a built-in cooling system that helps prevent any harm to your skin. Some patients say it feels like a rubber band snapping your skin as the laser passes over it. Side effects may include redness or mild swelling, but it clears quickly. Occasionally it may cause bruising lasting about one week.
Pulsed dye lasers like the Vbeam Perfecta are so safe that they’ve been used to treat port wine stains on babies and small children.
Am I a candidate for laser treatment?
While laser treatment is safe for most patients, it may not be as effective for people with severe acne or people with very dark skin. In these patients, the laser energy may not be able to target the pigmented treatment areas as well.
